Petra's Real Secret Wasn't Gold — It Was Water #history

Everyone knows the doorway — a hero rides through a narrow canyon, and a temple carved from red rock opens in front of him. That was a film, in 1989, and the temple inside was a studio set. The real Petra kept a different secret. The Nabataeans, Arab traders who made this rock their capital around the fourth century BC, faced a desert that attacked from both sides: almost no rain — then all of it at once, as a flood down the Siq, the kilometre-long gorge that was the city's front door. Their answer was one hidden system: a dam at the gorge mouth, a tunnel cut nearly ninety metres through solid rock to divert the flood, channels carved into the cliff walls, clay pipes sealed against the sun, and cisterns that stored the desert itself. Water made the caravan city rich — and in the city centre, they spent some of that wealth on a royal pleasure garden around a 43-metre pool, found again only in 1998. A note on what you see: the dam standing at the Siq entrance today is a 1964 reconstruction on the ancient foundations — the film shows the system as it worked, not the modern rebuild. The pool measured about 43 × 23 metres and 2.5 metres deep, holding over 2,000 cubic metres of water, with a pavilion on a stone island at its centre. The tunnel is called "nearly ninety metres" on purpose: published figures range from about 81 to 90 metres, so the film keeps the honest wording.
