At the premiere, Shimajiro and Mimirin were there to lead the crowd in a dance. The CIP minister and director of the Indigenous Languages Research and Development Foundation also attended to show their support. The beloved Japanese cartoon character Shimajiro and his friend, Mimirin, lead a group of children in a dance, bringing the energy to a fever pitch. How can we draw their attention? Is there nothing in our own languages? The age before kids start school is the golden window for learning a language. To help native languages take root at a young age, the Council of Indigenous Peoples is exploring numerous avenues. This time, they worked with a beloved cartoon character to encourage kids to speak Indigenous languages along with Shimajiro. Eteng Ingay Indigenous Languages R&D Foundation director We’ve done four languages so far, with 12 remaining. In November, we’ll be working on four of them, including Truku and Kavalan. Our preparations are done. We’ll collaborate with language talent, a voiceover association, and Shimajiro’s parent company, but they’ll make the final decision on which voice best suits the character. The council secured official authorization from Shimajiro’s parent company in Japan to translate and dub the animations in Taiwan’s 16 officially recognized Indigenous languages. Dubs have already been made in Amis, Paiwan, Atayal, and Bunun. Officials hope that the remaining voiceovers will go smoothly, allowing Taiwan’s native languages to be passed on for generations to come.
